Statement from the State Bar of New Mexico on Acts of Violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021

The State Bar of New Mexico supports all Americans to express their First Amendment rights through peaceful protest, guaranteed by our Constitution. However, we strongly condemn the acts of violence and criminal activity that occurred on January 6, 2021 in Washington, D.C.

Such unrest was disturbing and difficult to process. As officers of the legal system, we were called on to support the Constitution and our ethics code elaborates, “A lawyer should demonstrate respect for the legal system and for those who serve it, including judges, other lawyers and public officials. While it is a lawyer’s duty, when necessary, to challenge the rectitude of official action, it is also a lawyer’s duty to uphold legal process.” This charge remains a part of our responsibilities, as we work to support our legal community and the citizens of New Mexico.

The State Bar of New Mexico will continue to support and protect the rule of law and urge that those who undermine our society and democracy are held accountable.
