State Bar of New Mexico Ethics Helpline

By using the Ethics Helpline, you understand and agree to the following:

  1. The Ethics Helpline is available for New Mexico attorneys only with questions relating to the inquiring lawyer’s own prospective conduct under the New Mexico Rules of Professional Conduct.
  2. The Ethics Helpline will not opine on or discuss the conduct of others, nor whether an inquiring lawyer has a duty to report the conduct of others.
  3. The Ethics Helpline will not discuss or opine on substantive law, nor conduct legal research for the inquiring lawyer.  Guidance is of a general nature and it is the inquiring lawyer’s responsibility to either conduct their own, independent research to reach a conclusion and decision, or to retain private legal ethics counsel if seeking advice as to how to proceed, or both.
  4. The Ethics Helpline response will be limited to offering general suggestions as to rules, case law, or other things the inquiring lawyer may want to consider, review, and research.  The response is not intended to serve as legal advice to the inquiring lawyer, or to any other person, nor is the State Bar of New Mexico, or anyone calling on behalf of the State Bar of New Mexico intending to form or forming any type of attorney-client relationship with the inquiring lawyer or with any other person.
  5. The Ethics Helpline response is not a binding opinion, it is not intended to have any evidentiary value, it is not to be used in any subsequent matters, and it is not an instruction on or advice as to how anyone should proceed.  Ultimately, the inquiring lawyer will need to proceed based upon the inquiring lawyer’s own analysis and research.
Inquiring lawyers can contact the Ethics Helpline at 800-326-8155.
