The State-Tribal Child Welfare Attorney I will be responsible to act as the legal representation for the Pueblo of Isleta Social Services, Truancy Department, in matters where court and/or legal interventions are needed to ensure the safety and well-being of the Pueblo of Isleta community members. The position will also assist the State-Tribal Welfare Attorney II in implementing and executing the Child Welfare Program which consists of collaboration with the State regarding the Indian Family Protection Act.

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans to promote family and economic stability, helping clients access food, shelter, security, and to preserve their unique cultural heritages. NMLA has locations throughout the state, including Santa Ana Pueblo, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, and Taos.
NMLA’s Native American Program (NAP) provides free legal services – both civil and criminal – to eligible low-income Native Americans living on or near the 19 Pueblos and the Mescalero Apache tribe in New Mexico. In addition to cases promoting family and economic stability, NAP prioritizes cases arising because of someone’s status as a Native American, including tribal and Indian law, estate planning involving tribal property, racial discrimination, and tribal criminal court cases. Much of NAP’s caseload is comprised of cases in Pueblo courts.
This position is based onsite at the Pueblo of Isleta and at NAP’s office on Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

This is a temporary, hybrid part-time Legal Internship. The Legal Intern will work closely with attorneys to assist with tasks such as conducting research, organizing legal files, drafting legal documents, memoranda, and miscellaneous reports. Additionally, the Legal Assistant will maintain client communication, schedule appointments, and meet various due dates associated with court appearances and processes. The Legal Intern may be tasked with various aspects of litigation such as interviewing and preparing witnesses and preparing for pre-trial conferences by organizing evidence or engaging in reasoning and strategizing based on case facts. The legal assistant will be required to read, comprehend, analyze, and apply tribal, federal, and state statues, policies, procedures, case law, and other relevant texts with varying degrees of complexity.

The Chief Judge is the leader of the Judicial Branch of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, include. The Chief Judge is responsible for fairly and impartially hearing and deciding matters within the jurisdiction of the Pueblo of Pojoaque Tribal Court pursuant to the Pueblo of Pojoaque Law and Order Code and customs and traditions of the tribe. The Tribal Court Judge must consistently demonstrate the ability to analyze difficult and complex facts and issues and to issue clear oral and written decisions in a timely manner. Moreover, the Judge must consistently demonstrate judicial knowledge and temperament.
